Quincy Wilson broke his own national record at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet, Tobago, yesterday, the 25-year-old athlete landing the implement 59.65 metres for gold in the Falcons Invitational men’s discus event.
Wilson produced the big record-breaking throw in the opening round of the competition. He followed up with a 56.82m effort, and then threw 58.25m in round three. Wilson fouled his fourth round attempt, but bounced back to throw 51.82m, before closing off the competition at 58.11. The winning effort was five centimetres better than the previous Trinidad and Tobago record of 59.60m, established by Wilson back in 2011.
Akeem Stewart finished second to Wilson, the para athlete throwing 53.78m. Bronze, meanwhile, went to Kesean Phillips (50.10m).
Keshorn Walcott made light work of his rivals, the reigning Olympic champion winning the men’s javelin title with an 82.90m effort. His training partner, Shakeil Waithe threw 74.50m to pick up silver, falling short of his 83.00m Olympic qualifying goal.
Deborah John produced a solid run in the women’s 100 metres hurdles, getting to the line first in 13.15 seconds. The clocking, though, was slower than the 13 seconds flat Olympic qualifying standard John was targeting. Jeminise Parris finished second in 14.18, with third spot going to Kechelle Douglas (15.00).
Akanni Hislop struck gold in the men’s 200m, the 18-year-old sprinter stopping the clock at 21.41 seconds. Kevin Haynes (21.58) and Quinn-Lee Ralph (21.60) earned silver and bronze, respectively. Hislop is fine-tuning his preparations for the July 19-24 World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
Jenea Spinks, who will also represent the Red, White and Black in Poland, won the Falcons Invitational women’s 100m dash in 11.86 seconds. The men’s 100m title went to Ralph in 10.51. Holland Cabara clocked 10.53 to finish a close second.
Portious Warren was the class of the women’s shot put field, taking top honours with a 14.85m throw. Chelsea James produced a 44.40m effort for women’s discus gold. And the men’s shot put title went to Shervorne Worrell at 17.55m.
